Leipzig/Hanover: SaxonQ is presenting the third generation of its mobile quantum computers. At Hannover Messe this week, the company unveiled the QC2026 DUAL CORE – a quantum computer featuring two quantum processors running in parallel with 5 qubits per processor core. The qubits are generated using NV technology in diamond chips, enabling stable operation at room temperature, without cooling, and powered by any standard wall outlet. With this new generation, SaxonQ has delivered a significant boost in speed and performance for its mobile system.

With dual-core technology, SaxonQ takes a decisive step forward: two processor cores compute jointly within a single system, can be controlled independently, and are capable of executing parallel operations. This demonstrates that SaxonQ’s quantum processors can potentially be scaled to multi-core systems with any number of cores. A new readout technology has also significantly increased the speed of the quantum computer.

Co-founder and CEO Prof. Marius Grundmann: “In the race to build the first broadly usable industrial quantum computer, scalability is the decisive factor. Our qubits in diamond have been running stably in any environment for years. With this new generation, we have not only significantly increased computing power, but also meaningfully improved qubit accuracy and the overall system stability. Quantum computing is arriving in the real world – and with us, also via the cloud.”

CEO Dr. Frank Schlichting: “The fact alone that we are presenting the third generation of quantum computers in the company’s fifth year of existence is an enormous achievement by our team. We are not talking about theory or devices that only work in a perfect laboratory environment. We are demonstrating that this technology will soon deliver a decisive advantage in energy supply, medical research, artificial intelligence, and many other industries. With the dual-core system, the path to a quantum computer on a chip – and with it, broad industrial application – has become a whole lot shorter.”

The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) in Dresden is already using our mobile quantum computer for its own research projects. Now, we’ve made working with the system even easier and more flexible:

We’ve integrated an API into our Gemstone software, allowing developers to seamlessly embed the SaxonQ quantum computer into their own programs.

This enables Fraunhofer IWU’s developers to:

write their own software and send computation tasks directly to the quantum computer,

check the device and job status,

and automatically retrieve results.

This makes research on quantum algorithms and application development much more practical and hands-on.

New use cases – in optimization, simulation, or materials development – can now be tested directly on real hardware.

Together with Fraunhofer IWU, we’re continuously working to bring quantum computing from research into industrial practice and to demonstrate the performance of our mobile system in real-world applications.

The TGFS Technology Start-up Fund Saxony is investing a seven-figure amount in SaxonQ GmbH. With this investment, TGFS is providing a targeted boost for SaxonQ’s next development phase, strengthening a local deep-tech company in its development and scaling stage. In parallel, SaxonQ is preparing a larger funding round to miniaturize its technology down to chip size and to develop the necessary production technologies, such as single-ion implantation.

The goal is to further accelerate the development and industrial application of quantum computing in Saxony and to secure the region’s innovation advantage. The active use of SaxonQ’s technology and recent awards underline the company’s excellent position for continued growth.

Statements on the collaboration

Another step towards application-oriented quantum computing: SaxonQ has successfully connected its mobile quantum computer to QCI Connect, the quantum computing platform of the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative (DLR QCI). Through this new framework, industry partners, research institutions, and startups can now access computing time on real qubits.

This means that SaxonQ’s quantum computer, originally designed as a standalone system, is now also network-enabled via API – and is available for selected partner applications through the DLR infrastructure.

Pioneer Project with the German Aerospace Center

The starting point was the DLR itself: In an initial pilot project, SaxonQ’s freely programmable 4-qubit system – based on NV technology – was connected at the Innovation Center in Hamburg and integrated into network operations. The quantum computer operates there at room temperature, requires no complex infrastructure, and provides developers with easy access through a graphical user interface., benötigt keine aufwändige Infrastruktur und bietet über eine grafische Benutzeroberfläche einen einfachen Zugang für Entwickler:innen.

Computing Time on Real Qubits

QCI Connect allows partners to test their own algorithms on real hardware in close collaboration with the developer teams. To this end, SaxonQ developed a dedicated framework that receives cloud jobs, validates them, forwards them to the quantum processor, and returns the results in a structured manner. A digital twin of the quantum computer with simulated qubits enabled full software development and testing before commissioning.

With the cloud connection via QCI Connect, quantum computing on the SaxonQ system is now available for the first time to a broader developer community – ideal for training, applications, and experiments with real qubits in realistic environments.

A new 4 qubit quantum computer supplied by SaxonQ has been in operation at the Dresden branch of Fraunhofer IWU since June 11. The device is available to the Saxon Research Network for Quantum Technologies (SAX-QT), in which several Fraunhofer institutes, universities and colleges are involved, for research into new areas of application for quantum computing.

The IWU itself will use the new computer primarily for the further development of Industry 4.0 solutions for self-controlling, human-learning (cognitive) production. Industrial partners will also benefit from the institute's close links to the manufacturing sector (automotive, aviation, mechanical and plant engineering). The new quantum computer will give an additional boost to the Saxon Research Network for Quantum Technologies (SAX-QT).

In SAX-QT, the Fraunhofer IWU and IPMS institutes are working on innovative quantum technologies and quantum materials, in particular with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) and the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW) Dresden. SAX-QT brings together the expertise of the participating network partners in the field of quantum technologies in order to promote regional and European technological sovereignty in this area.
